Is there a treatment?

IMPORTANT: This isn’t a guide for the treatment of RTT. The treatment program has to be individualized following an assessment of the affected individual’s clinical problems and needs.

There is no cure for Rett Syndrome (RTT). Treatment is mainly symptomatic and supportive. It should include psychosocial support for family members.

Treatment may include examination at regular intervals by a multidisciplinary team with particular attention to growth, dentition, nutritional intake, gastrointestinal function, mobility and communication skills, hand function, and orthopedic and neurologic complications. There should be regular monitoring for scoliosis and possible heart abnormalities.

Children may require or need:
Medication for breathing irregularities and motor difficulties
Anticonvulsant drugs to control seizures
Occupational therapy to help them develop skills needed for performing self-directed activities
Special equipment and aids
